COMMUNICATION and SELF-EXPRESSION ISSUES

Do you have difficulty communicating your needs or wants to others?

Do you find yourself having trouble finding the right words to say that effectively express what you’re feeling?

Do you sometimes feel that the other person is not accurately understanding what you’re trying to say?

Have you ever felt that the other person did not even hear anything you said to them?

Do you often find yourself daydreaming or your mind starts to wander while someone is talking to you?

Have you ever found yourself in the position of having to defend yourself for offending another person when all you did was try to discuss a situation in hopes of peaceful resolution?

If you answered yes to any of these questions you’re most likely having trouble communicating effectively.

The good news is you’re not alone!

Studies have shown that communication problems were the most common issue that led to divorce

at a rate of 65% to 67%

Generally speaking, communication is the foundation of any successful relationship, not just marriages. We have many different relationships in all aspects of our lives: friendships, partnerships, work relationships, acquaintances, family relationships, etc., so being able to communicate effectively can change your life for the better in many ways and on many levels.

One possible cause for having difficulty communicating is that you don’t have the proper skills for sending and receiving messages effectively. This could be due to choosing ineffective or inaccurate words to use to express your message clearly. Additionally, you may not be expressing them in a clear manner. Alternately, it could be that your verbal cues don’t match your non-verbal cues when trying to express yourself effectively, causing others to receive mixed messages. It is also possible that you have trouble expressing yourself to others because you don’t have a full understanding of your own message, feelings and emotions.

Additionally, there are other cues to pay attention to as well when you’re trying to communicate effectively whether you are the sender or receiver of the message, such as listening.

Listening is a very important aspect of successful communication. It is possible that your listening skills need improvement in order to fully listen, hear and understand what is being said and expressed to you by others.

In any of these cases, having difficulties in communication & self-expression is likely to be causing you to have difficulty in life & in your relationships.

Psychotherapy and CBT help to review and rework unhelpful or unhealthy ways of thinking and behaving. Therefore, it is also helpful in improving communication and self-expression. Therapy helps you to gain insight into your feelings and emotions to help you better understand them and, in turn, to better express them to others. Therapy can also help you to learn to identify and recognize your unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, as well as resolve their underlying causes, which will then help to decrease the problems they tend to cause in your interpersonal relationships.

As I have mentioned on previous pages, I use CBT as the basis for my psychotherapy, as well other helpful methods, tools, and strategies tailored to you as a unique individual to help you get complete care, support, and healing throughout your journey in therapy.
